Children Can't Tell Who Is Lying and What Is Dangerous on Social Media

With few legal limits around social media and kids and teens being the ones spending the majority of their time on those platforms, it's no wonder that we're seeing a crisis in mental health amongst young people. While social media can be helpful for adults to connect, network, and find community, kids and teens are still developing the parts of their brains that help them avoid the pull of peer pressure and allure of social validation through risky behaviors.

While we adults can (usually) recognize a filter and Photoshop on an image, teens may struggle to realize an image is heavily edited and wonder why they don't look like the photo they see represented in front of them. For as savvy as kids and teens are with technology, their brains are still developing and they don't yet fully grasp what is realistic and what is not. It's like the harmful diet culture of the 1990s and early aughts – when magazines would slim down popular celebrities on their covers until they were almost unrecognizable – but supercharged and with no guardrails in place.

There was a time in the 1990s when parents shifted from letting their children play unsupervised outside to a collective panic that kidnappers were hiding behind every parked car. Parents no longer wanted kids to be left to their own devices and kids were either expected to play outside with a parent present or indoors where they were “safe.” Coincidentally, it was around this time that the personal computer became more common in American homes, and many kids got their first taste of the online world.
